Asian Development Tour to return for BRG Open Golf Championship Da Nang

Following its successful introduction to the Asian Development Tour (ADT) schedule last season, the BRG Open Golf Championship Da Nang will once again be staged at Da Nang Golf Resort, from 31 August – 2 September.

The event broke new ground in 2022 marking the first time the ADT had visited Vietnam and was won by rising Chinese star Chen Guxin – following a sudden-death play-off against Lloyd Jefferson Go of the Philippines.

This year sees the introduction of SeaBank as the tournament’s newest partner and with this new relationship it is anticipated that the prize money for the event will top the US$75,000 on offer at the inaugural event last year.

“The BRG Open Golf Championship Da Nang is a long-term project with local-promoter, VGS Events, and we welcome the second staging of an important tournament for Vietnam and the Asian Development Tour,” said Ken Kudo, Associate Director, Partnerships, Asian Tour.

“We thank Da Nang Golf Resort for their continued support and look forward to another edition of this popular new event which earned rave reviews from players last year.”

The tournament will boast a diverse international field of 144 players from across the region, including 99 ADT members who will play alongside 20 professionals nominated by the Vietnam Golf Association.

Added Kudo: “Importantly, this year’s event will play a key role in promoting the city of Da Nang as a tourist and golfing destination. It is also part of the Da Nang Golf Tourism Festival and will act as a platform to inspire young Vietnamese golfers to pursue professional golf as a career.

“The country enjoyed great success at the SEA Games this year, with Le Khanh Hung winning gold and Nguyen Anh Minh bronze in the men’s individual event. Their performances helped Vietnam claim silver in the team competition, and we are confident the BRG Open Golf Championship Da Nang will build on this momentum.”

Chen’s win last year, fittingly coming on Vietnam’s National Day, was his second on the ADT after claiming the Blue Canyon Classic in May.

Victory for the young Chinese golfer helped him to finish fifth on the Final ADT Order of Merit to secure full playing rights on the 2023 Asian Tour, with the top 10 on the Merit list earning Tour cards for the following season.

Today’s news comes soon after the announcement in May, that the Da Nang Golf Resort had become a member of Asian Tour Destinations – the exclusive network of world-class golfing venues in the region with direct ties to the Asian Tour.

The impressive Da Nang City venue, which boasts two 18-hole courses, one designed by Jack Nicklaus and the other by Greg Norman, became only the second golf club in Vietnam to join ATD, which now boasts a total of 13 members across the region.

The Nicklaus course will be used for the BRG Open Golf Championship Da Nang.

A fifth tournament in Indonesia, the inaugural OB Golf Championship, has been added to the Asian Development Tour (ADT) schedule this season, and will be played on the West Course at Gunung Geulis Country Club, 27-29 September.

The US$70,000 event is one of eight tournaments currently on the schedule – with many more event announcements pending – and the fourth ADT tournament to be promoted by OB Golf, the organisation behind the country’s most lucrative event, the Indonesian Masters, an Asian Tour event that is part of The International Series.

Said Jimmy Masrin from OB Golf and Chairman of the Asian Tour: “OB Golf have long been a supporter of the Asian Development Tour, and golf in Indonesia, so we are delighted to launch a new event, the OB Golf Championship – which will provide another all-important playing opportunity for the region’s up and coming golfers.

“Golf in Indonesia is blossoming once again, and OB Golf are proud to be able to play a key role in helping to promote the game, its players and tournaments. The OB Golf Championship will be an exciting new addition to our portfolio of golfing properties and all efforts will be made to ensure a memorable and successful launch.”

OB Golf also promote The 2nd Indo Masters Golf Invitational presented by TNE, the Indonesia Pro-Am and the OB Golf Invitational.

“This is another great announcement, coming quickly off the back of the recent news about the addition of four Indonesian events onto the Asian Development Tour schedule,” said Cho Minn Thant, Commissioner & CEO, Asian Tour.

“We continue to be blessed with a constant stream of good news about the ADT and the Asian Tour during an unprecedented time of growth for golf in the region and we thank OB Golf and Gunung Geulis Country Club, who are also hosting The Indonesia Pro-Am presented by Combiphar & Nomura, for their long-term support and commitment.”

Indonesia’s rising star Naraajie E. Ramadhanputra (pictured) triumphed at the ADT’s season-opening Singha Phuket Open in May. The Tour’s second event, the All Thailand Partnership Trophy, tees off this week at Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club, Mountain and Ocean Courses, 6-9 July.

Both events, and the ensuing week’s Singha Pattaya Open at Laem Chabang International Country Club are jointly sanctioned with the All Thailand Golf Tour.

The Asian Development Tour (ADT) will return to one of its most popular and regular destinations this year after confirming today that four events in Indonesia have been included on the schedule.

The Indonesia Pro-Am Presented by Combiphar & Nomura – an innovative and exciting new event benefitting from the support of a duo of strong, existing tournament partners – and three established events, the BNI Ciputra Golfpreneur Tournament, the OB Golf Invitational and The 2nd Indo Masters Golf Invitational presented by TNE, will be staged mid-season adding to an increasingly expanded schedule.

The first event – which in addition to the individual tournament will feature a Pro-Am competition – will be played at Gunung Geulis Country Club from August 16-18. Total prizemoney will be US$125,000, while there is a pot of US$25,000 for the Pro-Am. The venue’s West and East Courses will be utilised.

The US$125,000 BNI Ciputra Golfpreneur Tournament – won last year by impressive Thai golfer Suteepat Prateeptienchai, the 2022 ADT Order of Merit (OOM) winner following a hat-trick of victories – will return to Damai Indah Golf, BSD Course, from 23-26 August.  This year will mark the eighth edition of the tournament.

In 2019 Tom Kim, the young Korean star now ranked 22nd on the Official World Golf Ranking, and a two-time winner on the PGA Tour competing in this week’s US Open, claimed the Ciputra event – firing a warning shot to the world of golf that he was coming.

The US$70,000 OB Golf Invitational, first played in 2018, will be hosted by Sentul Highlands Golf Club, a new venue for the event, from 6-8 October.

The country’s rising star Naraajie E. Ramadhanputra triumphed in the event last year, helping to launch an outstanding start to his professional career, as he also won the inaugural PIF Saudi Open later in the year, before finishing third on the Final ADT OOM to secure, along with Suteepat, full playing privileges on this year’s Asian Tour – a reward bestowed on the top-10 finishers on the Merit list. The young Indonesian has also been in fine form this season, securing the Singha Phuket Open in May – the ADT’s season-opening event, jointly sanctioned with the All Thailand Golf Tour.

The 2nd Indo Masters Golf Invitational presented by TNE – which, like the Indonesia Pro-Am and OB Golf Invitational, is promoted by OB Golf, the organiser of the country’s most lucrative golf tournament the Indonesian Masters, on the Asian Tour and part of The International Series – completes the four events and will be hosted by Imperial Klub Golf, from 11-13 October. The purse will be US$70,000. Australian Harrison Gilbert lifted the trophy in 2022.

“This is another important announcement for the Asian Development Tour, the Asian Tour’s incredibly important feeder circuit, that continues to flourish and confirm its essential position across our platforms,” said Cho Minn Thant, Commissioner & CEO, Asian Tour.

“OB Golf are a long standing and wonderfully supportive partner, and we also thank Ciputra, the Professional Golf Tour of Indonesia, and the respective sponsors and venues for their much-welcomed involvement.

“The addition of a Pro-Am style tournament is also an exciting development that will add another level of excitement and interest in the Tour. Further schedule updates will be announced in due course.”

The next event on the ADT is the inaugural ADT – All Thailand Partnership Trophy, which will be staged at Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club, Mountain/Ocean Course, 6-9 July.

The Asian Development Tour (ADT) has whetted the appetite for its 2023 season today by announcing that three tournaments will be jointly sanctioned with the All Thailand Golf Tour (ATGT) – a long-standing partner of the ADT.

Ahead of a full schedule announcement, expected soon, the ADT confirmed that the Singha Laguna Phuket Open, the Singha Pattaya Open and the inaugural ADT – All Thailand Partnership Trophy will feature on both schedules this year, helping to ensure another strong season rich with events for the thriving circuits.

The Phuket event has been jointly sanctioned with the ADT since 2017 and will be played at Laguna Golf Phuket from May 25-28; while this will be the first edition of the Partnership Trophy and will be staged at Phoenix Gold Golf & Country Club, Chonburi, from July 6-9.

The Singha Pattaya Open is one of the most established events on the ATGT – won a record four times by Thailand’s Prom Meesawat – but this will mark the first occasion it will be part of the ADT. It will be played from July 13-16, the week after the Partnership Trophy.

Both the Phuket and Pattaya tournaments will boast prizemoney of THB4 million (approximately US$117,000), while the tournament at Phoenix Gold will offer a purse of THB3 million (approximately US$88,000).

Cho Minn Thant, Commissioner & CEO, Asian Tour, said: “This a great way to start build up for the 2023 season on the Asian Development Tour. The schedule is taking shape and looks robust, particularly now we are able to re-affirm our mutually beneficial relationship with our friends at the All Thailand Golf Tour.

“The ATGT is arguably the region’s foremost domestic circuit and has launched the careers of some of the greatest players Asia has seen, so being able to co sanction events with them is a boon for all parties involved.”

All three events will feature 144 players, with a minimum of 56 spots plus four invites for members of the ADT.

Last year the ADT was able to stage a total of 17 events boasting overall prizemoney of US$1.762 million.

A little over two years after play stopped on the ADT because of the global pandemic it was finally able to restart at the Gurugram Challenge in India, in March of 2022

After India, which was won by American Dodge Kemmer, the Tour staged four consecutive events on Phuket Island in Thailand, called the ‘Beautiful Swing Thailand’ and jointly sanctioned with the MENA Tour, held six in Indonesia, visited Saudi Arabia for the first time for two ground-breaking tournaments, while Chinese-Taipei, Vietnam and Malaysia all staged one event each.

Thailand’s Suteepat Prateeptienchai dominated the season with three masterful victories – the Blue Canyon Open, and the BNI Ciputra Golfpreneur Tournament and Combiphar Players Championship, both in Indonesia – to earn a battlefield promotion onto the Asian Tour for the remainder of the season. The last player to achieve that feat was Korean star Joohyung Kim in 2019.

The top-10 players from the final ADT Order of Merit were rewarded with playing privileges for the Asian Tour in 2023 – previously seven players earned their cards.

In addition to Suteepat, the others to make it through were: Thailand’s Chonlatit Chuenboonngam (2nd), Indonesia’s Naraajie E. Ramadhanputra (3rd), Malaysia’s Shahriffuddin Ariffin (4th), China’s Chen Guxin (5th), Thailand’s Chanat Sakulpolphaisan (6th), Lloyd Jefferson Go (7th) of the Philippines, American Dodge Kemmer (8th), Australian Harrison Gilbert (9th) and Thailand’s Denwit Boriboonsub (10th).

Thailand’s Varanyu Rattanaphiboonkij made birdie on three of the last four holes to snatch victory at the death in the US$125,000 Aramco Invitational today at Rolling Hills Golf Course.

Varanyu’s bogey-free seven-under-par 64 saw him finish on 16 under to win by one from overnight leader Dodge Kemmer from the United States (67) and England’s Barnes Wallis (64).

Norway’s Jarand Ekeland Arnoy (65) and Thai Suteepat Prateeptienchai (66) tied for fourth three behind the winner.

This marked Varanyu’s third victory on the Asian Development Tour (ADT) but first in four years, as both previous wins came in 2018: in the Combiphar Players Championship in Indonesia, and the Singha Laguna Phuket Open.

And with one event remaining, the Taifong Open next week, his fine performance has moved him into 11th place on the ADT Order of Merit, which gives him an outstanding chance of finishing in the top-10, something which will secure his playing privileges for the 2023 Asian Tour season.

Dodge Kemmer

“I am so happy, it’s been a long time since I won. It’s been over three years. I am so happy,” said Varanyu, who made birdie on 15, 17 and 18.

“I have just continued to work hard and improve and today it has paid off. I would like to thank Rolling Hills, Aramco and the Saudi Aramco Golf Association for making this all possible. I am so appreciative.”

He had started the final round two back from Kemmer and Othman Ibrahim Almulla, the popular local professional who is based here at Rolling Hills, and made a statement of intent by starting with two birdies before nobody could match his brilliant finish.

To the disappointment of the home supporters, Almulla closed with a 73 to tie for 18th.

Suteepat, a three-time ADT winner this year, remains first on the OOM, while Kemmer’s solid week of work has moved him into ninth on the Merit list and on the brink of regaining his Asian Tour card having only just lost it by the narrowest of margins two weeks ago at the season-ending BNI Indonesian Masters presented by TNE.

He finished 71st on the final Asian Tour Order of Merit, about US$70 short of 70th place, held by Filipino Miguel Tabuena, which was the cut off mark.

The all important US$200,000 Taifong Open will be played at Taifong Golf Club from December 22-25.

American Dodge Kemmer and local favourite Othman Ibrahim Almulla from Saudi Arabia shot rounds of seven-under-par 64 and 65 respectively today at the US$125,000 Aramco Invitational to share the second-round lead in the 54-hole event.

The duo lead what is the penultimate event of the season on the Asian Development Tour (ADT) on 11 under by a shot from China’s Chen Guxin, who carded a 65.

First-round leader Varanyu Rattanaphiboonkij from Thailand returned a 68 and is one stroke further back at Rolling Hills Golf Course.

Kemmer won the Gurugram Challenge in India in April, which was the first ADT played following the two-year break caused by the global pandemic, and his fine form this week could not have come at a better time as he is currently 11th on the ADT Order of Merit with the top-10 earning Asian Tour cards for the 2023 season.

“It was a fun round,” said Kemmer, who started on 10.

Othman Ibrahim Almulla

“I got off to a shaky start but hit a stride in the middle and had six birdies in a row. From 14 through 1. So that was fun. That run ended on the second but got another one coming in.”

The American finished equal fourth in last week’s PIF Saudi Open.

He added: “I had a good round last final round last week. I have started to putt a bit better, I kind of feel the speed a little more, my wedges have been closer, and I have gotten away with a few wayward drives, compared with other weeks. It’s a combination of all those things and making a lot of birdies.

“The course is great, in great shape, there are a lot of chances but you have to be smart about it. You can’t hit driver everywhere, you have to think your way around it.”

Othman also began on the back nine and is clearly revelling playing on his home course.

He played his first nine holes in six-under-par 30 thanks to an eagle and four birdies, although there were less fireworks on his second nine, which he played in even par.

In what is only the second ADT event ever to be played in Saudi Arabia, last week’s PIF Saudi Open was the first, he’ll be hoping to make it a special day for the emerging golfing nation by winning the title.

Thailand’s Suteepat Prateeptienchai is lurking ominously in a tie for fifth, just three off the lead after a 65. The Tour’s Order of Merit leader is attempting to become the first player to win four times in a single season on the ADT.

Indonesia’s Naraajie E. Ramadhanputra, last week’s champion, fired a 70 and has a lot to do to record his third win this year as he is seven off the pace.

With the race to secure a top-10 finish on the Final Asian Development Tour (ADT) Order of Merit (OOM), and with it playing privileges on next year’s Asian Tour, drawing to a conclusion, this week’s Aramco Invitational at Rolling Hills Golf Course, in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, has attracted one of the strongest fields of the season.

The US$125,000 event is the penultimate stop of 2022 and a total of 19 players from the top 20 on the OOM, and 13 winners from the 15 events played so far this season have entered.

Indonesia’s emerging star Naraajie E. Ramadhanputra is competing and is the in-form player having won last week’s PIF Saudi Open, to go with the OB Golf Invitational he won in June.

His success last week, which marked the first ADT event ever to be played in the Middle East, moved him into third place on the OOM, which is being led by Thailand’s Suteepat Prateeptienchai, in first, and Chonlatit Chuenboonngamm, in second.

Both Thais are playing this week with Suteepat attempting to win his fourth title of the year, which would be an ADT record.

Suteepat Prateeptienchai is chasing an ADT record of four wins in a single season.

Malaysia Shahriffuddin Ariffin, winner of the PKNS Selangor Masters at the end of last month and ranked fourth, has entered along with Chen Guxin, a two-time champion in 2022 and the first Chinese golfer to claim an ADT event.

The 54-hole event commences tomorrow and will be followed by the season-ending US$200,000 Taifong Open at Taifong Golf Club, from December 22-25.

Building on 57 years of Aramco Invitational Tournament (SAIT) history, Aramco joined forces with the ADT to host its 58th edition as the Aramco Invitational Tournament.

The ADT is the best fit with SAIT’s history of developing and promoting golf in Aramco, Saudi Arabia, and the Middle East.  The objective is to create more playing opportunities for players from Asia and around the world.  Such involvement will provide Saudi national players with competitive opportunities and develop games and players at the grass-roots level.

The tournament, which is part of a new and exciting two-event swing in the Middle East, will feature a field of 126 golfers.

“The Asian Development Tour has enjoyed an incredible comeback year, post pandemic, and the Aramco Invitational is yet another boon for the Asian Tour’s secondary circuit,” said Cho Minn Thant, Commissioner & CEO, Asian Tour.

“Importantly, and in much the same way as the Asian Tour is becoming a tour of international destinations, the Asian Development Tour continues to branch out, and the chance to play in the Middle East for a second time this year is another incredible opportunity for our membership.

“Increasing playing opportunities in new markets for our players is always a top priority, so we would like to thank Aramco, Golf Saudi, the Aramco Golf Association, and the Rolling Hills Golf Course for bringing all the key components together to make the event possible.”

The Asian Development Tour (ADT) announced today that the Aramco Invitational will be staged at Rolling Hills Golf Club, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, from December 14–16.

Building on 57 years of Aramco Invitational Tournament (SAIT) history, Aramco has joined forces with the ADT to host its 58th edition as the Aramco Invitational Tournament.

The US$125,000 tournament will be the penultimate event of this season’s 17-leg circuit, which will culminate with the Taifong Open, to be held from December 22-25.

The tournament, which will be preceded by the PIF Saudi Open as part of a new and exciting two-event swing in the Middle East, will feature a field of 126 golfers and be played over 54 holes.

“The Asian Development Tour has enjoyed an incredible comeback year, post pandemic, and today’s news with regard to the Aramco Invitational is yet another boon for the Asian Tour’s secondary circuit,” said Cho Minn Thant, Commissioner & CEO, Asian Tour.

“Increasing playing opportunities in new markets for our players is always a top priority, so we would like to thank Aramco, Golf Saudi, the Aramco Golf Association, and the Rolling Hills Golf Course for bringing all the key components together to make the event possible.”

The Aramco Invitational launch also comes at a key moment, with players battling it out to try and finish in the top-10 on the ADT Order of Merit (OOM) and secure their playing privileges on the Asian Tour in 2023.

Nabil Al Nuaim, Chairman of the Aramco Golf Association, said: ” Aramco is proud to build on its tradition and continue to grow the game.  This is another great moment for the game of professional golf in Saudi Arabia. The country has an expanding portfolio of world-class events, but we are also active in growing the game at the developmental level, which the Asian Development Tour is a fine proponent of.

“The Aramco Invitational will provide a wonderful opportunity for players in our region to play in an international-standard tour event against a quality field of up-and-coming players and more experienced competitors.”

Malaysia’s Shahriffuddin Ariffin clinched victory at the PKNS Selangor Masters two weeks ago, in the most recent ADT event, while Thailand’s Suteepat Prateeptienchai remains in front on the OOM, thanks to three fine victories this season, earning him a battlefield promotion this year to the Asian Tour.

Selangor State Development Corporation, or PKNS – the title sponsor of the Selangor Masters, which commences tomorrow at Kelab Golf Seri Selangor – have welcomed the opportunity to partner with one of Malaysia’s best-known events.

The US$150,000 tournament, which is part of the Asian Development Tour (ADT), was last held in 2014 and as the honourable Selangor Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari explained at a press conference today with the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic over the chance to get involved with the event was too good to miss.

“When we heard there was an opportunity to host an Asian Development Tour event, we quickly jumped at the offer,” said Dato’ Seri Amirudin, who is also chairman of the PKNS Board.

“Despite the last-minute notice we are rather excited at being able to host a professional event again.

“I’m also happy to announce that this tournament is being organized in conjunction with the 77th birthday celebrations of His Highness the Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharifuddin Idris Shah.”

Dato’ Seri Amirudin also added that the players will be contesting for the Sultan of Selangor Cup and that golf plays an important role in the State’s ongoing efforts to increase tourism revenue through sporting events like the PKNS Selangor Masters.

The event’s purse of US$150,000 makes it one of the more lucrative stops on the Asian Development Tour this year, which boasts a total of 16 events with two more remaining after this week.

Headlining the event will be Thailand’s Suteepat Prateeptienchai and Chonlatit Chuenboonngam who are ranked one and two on the circuit’s Order of Merit.

Singapore’s Mardan Mamat, Malaysia’s Danny Chia and Kieran Vincent from Zimbabwe, brother of Asian Tour star Scott, have also entered along with Malaysian Ben Leong – winner of the inaugural Selangor Masters in 2008.

With the top 10 on the Final Order of Merit gaining Tour cards to compete on the Asian Tour next year, the competition is expected to be fierce, particularly for the local contingent.

Malaysians Sharifuddin Ariffin and Paul San are currently ranked seventh and ninth respectively and will want to take advantage of the home support to maintain their hopes for 2023.

Also, in with a chance of moving into the top 10 is Malaysian Ervin Chang, ranked 15th and just over US$3,000 short of 10th placed Naraajie Ramadhanputra of Indonesia.

Notable other names playing this week are Galven Green, brother of Gavin, Khor Kheng Hwai, Danny Chia, Airil Rizman and veteran M. Ramayah.

Japanese amateur Daichi Hayashi is also playing, and aged 12 years old he is the youngest player ever to compete in an ADT event.

A total of 60 Malaysians, including a handful of amateurs, will tee up on the challenging Par 71 Seri Selangor layout, designed by well-known architect Ross Watson. The par-five 18th will play as a par four, as has always been the case for professional tournaments.

Seri Selangor has often been referred to as the only true public course in Malaysia. It is well-known for its firm, fast greens and narrow fairways hemmed in by towering trees.

The ADT season continues on to Riyadh GC from Dec 8-10 for the Saudi Open and finally the Taifong Open in Chinese Taipei from Dec 22-25. Both events offer US$200,000 in prize money.

Asian Development Tour (ADT) players can look forward to a bumper end-of-season bonanza.

Making a welcome return to the schedule after a three-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Taifong Open will act as the decisive, final event on the 2022 ADT.

With the leading 10 players, not otherwise exempted, on the final 2022 ADT Order of Merit following the conclusion of the Taifong Open earning their Asian Tour cards for the 2023 season, it promises to be a memorable week in Chinese Taipei.

Further good news for participants at the Taifong Golf Club from December 22-25 is that the prize fund is being increased by 25 per cent to US$200,000, becoming the joint richest event on the ADT.

When the tournament was last staged on the ADT at the end of 2019, the purse was US$160,000.

Cho Minn Thant, Commissioner and CEO, Asian Tour, said: “Given that the Taifong Open will once more bring down the curtain on the ADT season, it’s a fabulous development that we’ll have a significant rise in prize money.

2019 Taifong Open winner Donlaphatchai Niyomchon.

“With Asian Tour cards on the line and so much at stake, it’s fitting that the Taifong Open will offer the equal highest purse on the Tour, reflecting the importance of the week.”

When the Taifong Open was last held on the Asian Development Tour in the final week of 2019 it was Thai Donlaphatchai Niyomchon who emerged triumphant.

It was the sixth year in succession that the Taifong Open had been part of the ADT.

Previous winners of the Taifong Open were Chinese Taipei’s Chan Shih-chang (2018 and 2014); Thai Pannakorn Uthaipas (2017); American Johannes Veerman (2016) and Thai Rattanon Wannasrichan (2015).

Thailand’s Suteepat Prateeptienchai sensationally made it three wins within a month in Indonesia on the ADT when he triumphed in the US$100,000 Combiphar Players Championship, at Parahyangan Golf, in September.

He tops the Order of Merit and his three brilliant victories meant he earned a battlefield promotion on to the Asian Tour for the remainder of this season.

Three events remain this season: the Selangor Masters, the Saudi Open and the Taifong Open.
